Caliban's War by James S.A.Corey

I loved Leviathan Wakes (the first book in the “Expanse” series by James S.A.Corey). It was a good old-fashioned space opera with elements of mind-bending science fiction. It had the most interesting alien life form since Stanislav Lem’s “Solaris”. And it had vomit zombies. But at the same time “Leviathan Wakes” was so male-centric that the journey of its main character (Holden) has never become personal for me..

And then I began reading the second book in the series, “Caliban’s War”. From the start, it was a much faster paced book than “Leviathan wakes”, and it had a very good continuation of the main story arc about the alien life form. Plus, the series progressed in the second book: where the first book’s emphasis was mostly on the space opera elements, the second book moved further and did a very good job at character development arcs. I started to care so much more for Holden as he gained few dimensions in the book 2. The same happened with the other book 1 characters.

Besides this, several new wonderful characters were added. And few of them were female. I loved them all, especially Bobby and Avasarala. I love to see gender stereotypes reversed, and it was great to read about adventures of super-capable space marine Bobby and caustic-mouth string-pulling politician Avasarala.

I liked “Caliban’s War” so much that I would give it 5 stars. To add, the series has a very capable audiobook narrator, Jefferson Mays. He has a pleasant voice and is really good at multi-character work where he subtly changes his voice in every chapter depending on the chapter’s POV .This is particularly welcome in a long series with many characters like Expanse.

I need to check out this series, clearly.

I really recommend this series - I haven't seen any new "proper" sci-fi series for a while, I thought they don't make them anymore.

I want to draw hearts around this book.
Bobbie is amazing as is Avasarala, but espevcially Bobbie.

It's a thing of beauty that it is actually possible to write a powerful woman warrior without falling back into Brienne territory. The way she ripped through all the defenses of the Mao spaceship...omg, I cheered during the whole encounter.
She is not some freak, she isn't some ugly misfit, she is a talented soldier in her natural enviremont and omg, it was awesome and I need to send some emial to the writers to thank them for giving me that.
Also it was great having her being an ally of Avasarala, I heart all the scenes between those two.

I loved Leviathan Wakes, but I adore Caliban's War.

Me too! I totally didn't expect such a good set of female characters after the book 1 . I am so looking forward the TV series (you know that Expanse is going to be TV series, right?). I am already casting Bobby in my mind.

I got the third book like 2 weeks ago and I still haven't had time to read it. I'm equally bummed I haven't had the pleasure to read it yet and happy because the longer I put reading it off, the longer I can delay finishing the trilogy because after this? There is no more Expanse. Argh. Told you you'd like it.

Incidentally, I tried Shadow and Betrayal, which contains "A Shadow in Summer" and "A Betrayal in Winter", the first 2 books of Abraham's 1st fantasy saga and I just couldn't get through it. I may try again, but not soon. I can't believe this is the same guy that wrote the Expanse? Argh. Maybe it's just me and fantasy that don't get along that well.
Alexandra Leavingalexandral on October 7th, 2013 02:01 pm (UTC)
I LOVED CALIBANS WAR so much I didn't even expect it. It is amazing!

I was going to check Abraham's other book (he is one part of James S.A Corey, another one is Ty Franck). Hmm, I trust your taste.

But more Expanse - you know that there will be Expanse TV series, right? I am mostly on Twitter now so I didn't post this here.

You should try tho. I'm not a huge fantasy fan tbh so I'm kinda picky when it comes to it. I do love things like NK Jemisin' books (omg, the Inheritance trilogy is still one of my favorite things ever), but...well, yeah, I'm picky. If I have to read something, it's probably going to be scifi or fics these days. LOL Or, idk, urban fantasy? Think Jim Butcher series because they're easy and quick reads.

I DID NOT KNOW THAT OMG! wait, wait. Is there a cast yet? Oh god, this is equally exciting and dreadful. On the one hand, yes to more scifi shows! On the other, what if tptb mess it up? Man, I'm so jaded cos I can't imagine tptb to make something nice out of it.

I'm still on Dreamwidth for real life related posts. Fandom-wise? I'm on tumblr. I don't like it much (dude, interacting there is not as easy as it is on lj/dw) but fandoms seem to have migrated there and...well, that's where I am. Good thing I can queue stuff so the blog has always new content even when I'm not actually there. LOL
Alexandra Leavingalexandral on October 14th, 2013 05:26 pm (UTC)
I don't think there is a cast yet, by the pilot will be written by the same guys that did Children of Men and Iron Man: http://variety.com/2013/tv/news/iron-man-writers-enter-sci-fi-mystery-tv-project-for-alcon-the-expanse-1200598499/

NK Jemisiin is on my list too. The problem there is that I can't get an audiobook copy for the 3rd book.

The same thing happened to me - LJ has become super-annoying, I found a couple of people I like to talk to on LJ on twitter and moved there. Twitter is so fast , so I don't need to spend lots of time posting.

You know what I like about twitter? Interacting with the authors and reading their tweets. JK Jemisin is pure awesome and I havn't even started her books yet! This is me on twitter, btw : https://twitter.com/mindneedsbooks
blueocean80blueocean80 on October 14th, 2013 05:36 pm (UTC)
That seems promising, but ngl, I'd rather not get my hopes up. Every single time I do that, I end up being burned. /o\

Mm, can't help with that, sorry. I own the novels (I actually preordered book 2 and 3 because I loved the first one so much I didn't want to miss it)

I have a twitter, but I never use it anymore? IDK, it's super spammy for me? Maybe I hsould just unfollow a few ppl? IDK, i kept getting notifs every 2 seconds and it was slightly annoying. The problem is that my t-list is from all over the world so the phone kept buzzing at all hours. /o\ Well, at least the iphone has the DND feature and i guess I could disable notifs for that app? I haven't even thought about it cos back when I registered the account, I still had the old phone with a java app which wasn't exactly super customizable. ;)

Jemisin is on the net as well. http://nkjemisin.com/ I have that as a live bookmark so whenever she posts, I can check it out. :)

Thanks. I'll add you the next time I open twitter (could be in six months tho. LOL)
Alexandra Leavingalexandral on October 14th, 2013 05:53 pm (UTC)
Oh yes, you can totally disable notifs.
Alexandra Leavingalexandral on October 14th, 2013 05:31 pm (UTC)
oh, and my current subtitle go-to person for kdrama is on twitter :D
blueocean80blueocean80 on October 14th, 2013 05:43 pm (UTC)
who, may I ask? Man, I'm so out of the loop. I haven't watched a kdrama is...forever. I think I can blame this super long hiatus to a combination of things:

1) my k-drama fever diminished considerably after Secret Garden. This thing KILLED my obsession. I'll forever blame it for ruining kdramas for me even though I kept watching them for quite some time after SG but the damage was already done;
2)I don't go to korean class anymore (i went for group classes, in the end ended up in a one-to-one and it was fun but I went there to learn AND socialize? And idk. whatever)
3)getting into other fandoms
4)started shipping a non canon pairing hardcore
5)reading fics

and #3,#4,#5 and #6 are all related, I'd say.

But yeah, I miss talking and LJing but this site is frankly unusable anymore. Like, the last time I checked my profile page I freaked out for, like, 10 minutes. I couldn't find anything anymore? Argh.
Alexandra Leavingalexandral on October 14th, 2013 05:52 pm (UTC)
I will send you a private message after I have done the dinner. :D

I HATED SECRET GARDEN SO MUCH TOO. I wasn't watching too much Kdrama at some point too, but lately there have been some good ones. " I Can Hear Your Voice"? Pure adorbleness and good writing.

LJ is is crazy. I even got a blog cause I was so annoyed with LJ ( http://mindneedsbooks.blogspot.co.uk/ ) It is a bit lonely at the moment, but I will keep posting
blueocean80blueocean80 on October 14th, 2013 06:06 pm (UTC)
Okay, cool! :)

IKR! STUPID KDRAMA THAT RUINED KDRAMAS AND BINNIE AND HA JI WON FOR ME. It was honestly the beginning of the end. No, no, I can't say that because that means I won't EVER watch another kdrama and nope, that cna't be happening!

That sounds good. *checks dramawiki* Oh lord, it lists it as a multi-genre kdrama. And "fantasy" is thrown into the mix. I think I'm too scarred and scared to start watching kdramas again with that kind. Then agian, I trust your judgement. Hmmm. No, okay, not yet. I don't think I'm ready. LOL

I can't find your rss feed? How can I follow you without having a google+ profile?
Alexandra Leavingalexandral on October 14th, 2013 06:11 pm (UTC)
RSS feed? This is a good point. I will see about RSS feed and get back to you. I am new to this, you see. :D

Flower Boy Next Door was an adorable non-fantasy drama too. Triggery about bullying (just in case).
Alexandra Leavingalexandral on October 14th, 2013 06:00 pm (UTC)
I forgot to ask what fandoms are you in at the moment ;D

blueocean80blueocean80 on October 14th, 2013 06:21 pm (UTC)
oh. *big breath* Now that's a question.

Tvshows I'm currently watching (I'm considering only those that are currently airing. Shows on hiatus don't count, K?):
- Supernatural
- Chicago fire
- Haven
- Sleepy hollow
- BBC Atlantis

And I'm pretty sure I'm missing something. Um.

Fandoms I'm into? That's another question. LOL The biggest one is - pls don't laugh- Teen wolf. I'm also reblogging lots of SPN and Farscape. Also haven? And...idk, pretty much anything that I like. But it's mostly TW. *runs and hides* But the fandom is pretty fantastic. Canon is what it is, but the fandom is all kinds of nice.
Alexandra Leavingalexandral on October 14th, 2013 06:50 pm (UTC)
Oh, no need to be ashamed! My daughter and I are obsessing all over TW. We proudly ship derek and Styles too. :D
blueocean80blueocean80 on October 14th, 2013 08:26 pm (UTC)
OMG, you ship Sterek too? Wait, how did you know I ship Sterek? Did I tell you that? I forget lol Imma send you a pm
Alexandra Leavingalexandral on October 15th, 2013 07:11 am (UTC)
I didn't! Well, I thought you might remembering your previous ships, also - everyone I know ships them :D
blueocean80blueocean80 on October 14th, 2013 06:26 pm (UTC)
Yep, it's basically a...stream? Of all of your posts? But in a non-formatted text? That can be viewed in multiple devices/applications? IDK how to explain this better than that. But it doesn't have to be an RSS feed. Anything I can track your posts without signing up with blogger and/or google+ would be good. If you can find it, I'll follow you for sure.

I think I switched rss feed on, can you try it again?
